Clothes Dryer Problems

I decided to write this article due to the number of problems I have been having with my current clothes dryer. Learn about what I went through to fix a few problems I had with my dryer— including a broken tumbler belt and loose tumbler drum.

Dryer Design

The basic design of a dryer hasn't really changed much, and most people will find that their dryer will last a long time and it generally won't need a complete upgrade. A few fixes every now and then will keep it running for a very long time.

Depending on the design of your dryer, it will look pretty much similar to the picture above and contain all the main components. There are a few main parts of a dryer to investigate when something goes wrong.

Dryer Parts That Usually Require Fixes or Maintenance

  • Drum belt and rollers
  • Motor and motor bearings
  • Blower, heater, and heat sensors
Keeping your dryer clean is essential to keep it working properly.

Keeping your dryer clean is essential to keep it working properly.

Safety and Cleaning

First, make sure everything is unplugged before you start to tinker inside your dryer. Also, depending on the style of your dryer, pull the back door or hatch off slowly so that you don't accidentally rip off the wires.

Note that some old dryers also have very loose tumbler drums. So, when opening the back door, hold the drum in place to stop it from banging around inside the dryer compartment.

Cleaning

Cleaning is very important for your dryer—after opening up my clothes dryer after about ten years of use, I could tell it really needed some regular maintenance and cleaning.

There was an amazing layer of dust covering everything, while the actual box compartment was full of dust and little bits of sand. For newer dryers, this may be less of a problem. However, sometimes, if you hear your drum spinning a bit loudly it may just be a large layer of dust and dirt.

Common Dryer Problems

  1. Not spinning or not spinning correctly
  2. Heat problems
  3. Totally dead or won't start

1. Not Spinning or Not Spinning Correctly

One of the most common problems for a dryer is that the drum is either not spinning at all, or not spinning correctly (there are loud noises or screeching sounds, for example).

  • Drum belt issues: The most common reason for the dryer drum to stop spinning is if your drum belt has snapped or has been worn down completely. This is an easy fix and simply involves buying a replacement belt and feeding it through the pulleys and on the roller and then back around the middle of the drum.
  • Roller issues: The rollers could have worn out, causing the drum to spin in a bumpy and noisy manner, and they can usually be replaced depending on how old your dryer is. The pulleys could also be broken, causing problems.
  • Motor issues: The motor could have died after many years of use if the drum is not moving at all. If it is moving, the motor bearing could be off, causing it to spin around very roughly and sometimes scratch against the sides of the dryer compartment.
  • Dust build-up: Noises when it's plugged in and spinning could also be due to a huge amount of dust build-up around the drum. Sometimes, cleaning out the inside and returning the drum to the correct position can fix this problem.
  • Screeching: Screeching noises are not a good sign. Sometimes it could mean that your drum is slowly cutting into the sides, which could permanently put your dryer out of use if this continues.
Digital multimeter, look for resistance settings or OHMS symbol.

Digital multimeter, look for resistance settings or OHMS symbol.

2. Heat Problems

Another common problem is that your dryer will either run too hot or too cold. Or, sometimes, it takes many cycles to dry a few simple items.

Use a Multimeter or Voltmeter

A simple multimeter or voltmeter you can buy from an electronics store is a useful device that could come in handy for testing that each component is working.

  • Lowest resistance setting: To test the functionality of each component, get your multimeter or voltmeter and put on the lowest resistance setting,
  • Temperature switch: The leads on the switch terminal should read zero or infinity. The same applies to the thermostat, heating coils, and timer testing.

Most Common Causes for Heat Problems

  • Temperature sensors: The temperature sensors could be dead or fried and need replacing. They look like little silver dollars and are usually located under the drum.
  • Clogged exhaust outlet: The exhaust outlet could be clogged with dust and dirt, causing your dryer to run hotter than the temperature you set it at.
  • Defective parts: The thermostat or heating coils could be defective and need replacement
  • Timer issues: There could also be problems with the timer. If the timer is not working correctly this may cause the heater and blower to remain inactive.
  • Dead fuse: The fuse is dead and needs to be replaced.

3. Totally Dead or Won't Start

So your dryer won't start at all, or it's totally dead. This can be caused by the failure of one or more components and is sometimes hard to pinpoint. The most common reasons are below, apart from problems relating to your power mains.

What to Check When Your Dryer Won't Start

  • Timer or thermostat
  • Terminal block
  • Start switch

If anyone has any problems with their old Simpson brand dryer, I may be able to help you out as I spent a lot of time tinkering with my old one.

Cathy Dutton on August 08, 2019:

I have a Kenmore Dryer Model # 110.63954102 which was making loud vibration noise. Turns out the drum was scraping the top of the dryer. I replaced the belt (was dry), 4 drum rollers and the idler pulley roller and cleaned out about 2 lbs of lint (did NOT expect that!). Clearly the drum had become unseated and lint flew outside the drum too. Once cleaned and parts replaced, the dryer was re-balanced but it still makes a loud vibrating noise after about 15 seconds of starting. Not only that, problem #2 is that when the door opens, the drum (all 4 drum rollers too) stops rolling but the motor continues to spin for about 10 seconds, even though the drum stops rolling immediately when the door opens. I've googled possible fixes but I'm not sure where the problem really is and think the motor needs replacing. Is there a less expensive alternative than motor replacement?

I have a Samsung front load dryer. During mid cycle, it will shut off. The display screen will power off and you cannot turn it back on. After a few minutes, the screen will power back on and you can start it back up. But it won't last long. It seems like it is getting hot and shutting off. The duct looks free of debris. What could be the issue?

Bravewarrior on August 06, 2016:

My dryer seems to have stopped mid cycle, but I can't be sure as the clothes inside were dry. However, when I went to add a new load, I noticed the top of the dryer was hot to the touch, but won't turn on. No noise, no nothing. I had my son unplug the unit (Kenmore) because I'm afraid a fire will erupt.

What do you think is the cause? Why is it hot but won't run?

PattyWalk on May 06, 2016:

Kelcey,

The solution to the squealing noise my Tappan dryer was making was to replace the rear drum assembly. It's a hard plastic piece (like a huge ball bearing) that sits inside a metal piece and allows the drum to rotate. Over time ~ the grease dries out and the plastic part begins to wear down. This caused the drum on mine to shift to the right and the squealing was a result of the drum scraping against the side panel. If your dryer is hot to the touch, no, that's not normal. It means airflow is restricted. Make sure you clean the lint filter AND check inside the door. There should be a slot at the bottom of the door where you can use a vacuum attachment to clean out the lint. Not sure what metal piece is missing on your dryer but ~ I'd replace any missing parts...if possible. Even though the squealing noise is annoying (and should be fixed) ~ the overheating issue is cause for more concern. If it's due to lint buildup ~ it can be a fire hazard. I hope this helps with the problems you're having.

Kelcey on May 01, 2016:

I have a tappan dryer just got it from someone and it squeals off and on sometimes and the top of the dryer evem where the control knobs are get very hot is this normal? Its also missing the small metal piece at the bottom is that ok

Should I fix my Simpson Maxidry 505 or replace it with a Scirocoo 450 available for $50.

The problem with the Maxi is the fan belt needed replacing. I didn't realise it was outside the back and tried to take the whole back panel off. When I put it all back, I tried to line the tub up but now the tub doesn't' spin as well. At best, it's just an alignment problem, at worst, I've bent something.

I like the Maxi because it's all electro-mechanical parts, especially the relay that spins the tub in opposite directions.

If the Scirocco is considered just as good (perhaps a bit more modern), I'm happy to go with it. Does anyone know if it uses electro-mechanical parts? If so, I suppose it's just as good.

Otherwise, the MaxiDry works well. It just needed a fan belt.

I have a Samsung Dryer that is less than 2 years old. When I close the door the drum starts spinning immediately, eventhough the power switch is off. It spinns and there no heat. If I press the power button, it turns on but I still can't use it for drying. The only way to stop the drum from spinning is by opening the door. As soon as I close it back, or press on the door lock switch, it starts spinning again.

I lifted the top of the dryer to inspect and found that the rear rim of the drum is indeed scraping against the right side panel of the dryer. I've ordered a new belt and a rear bearing assembly kit. Hi, great info. just thought i would add my experience with my dryer. My condenser dryer stopped working and all it was was the cut off switch at the back behind a flip open compartment, it had got stuck and the machine thought that the water in the removable water container had not been emptied and had overflowed. a spray of WD40 and it was fixed. The other problem I have had was that the machine sounded like it was working but the drum was not turning, it wasn't the belt or the motor as i could give the drum a push start but it stopped every time it was going to change directions. It was the capacitor, which I replaced for around £7. The capacitor can however hold a dangerous charge even after machine is unplugged, so take care or get someone else to do it.

I want to send a nod in recognition of the pictures of the alternative dryer methods on this page and add top of the closet door and all rooms of the house doors (overnight)and also for those who have outside balconys that look onto woodsy areas (for fresh air dryer) just spread clothes on hanger and hook em high. We have a Kenmore heavy duty washer and dryer, and for some reason the other day when I was pushing the washer further back into place my arm touched the back of the dryer and I got a nasty shock while touching the back of the washer, so I checked with my volt meter and when you touch one diode to the back of the washer and the other to the back of the dryer they complete the current and become of electricity making both backs totally live. What could be causing this?

We have a new LG dryer. When is drys and the gas kicks on it makes a grinding sound like a kids toy for 10-15 seconds. The repair guy changed the igniter but still doing it. He said he thought it might be my gas line but the noise is absolutely coming from the dryer. We had no issues with the old dryer just the new one.

I have a Kenmore dryer 90 series. It's making a loud humming noise, and then shutsdown. The noise contines to get louder until it shuts off. After a while it tries to start up again, but never stays on long. It's warm and tumbling, but it won't stay on to finish a load. Is it the motor? We opened up. There was nothing but lent was covering everything. We cleaned it off and put it back together, yet the same problem continues to occur. Can you tell me what you think?

I have a maytag de303, was troubleshooting my dryer for lack of heat. Found a wilderness of lint and debris in the lint tray and below, cleaned out that and the pipe underneath that goes to the vent to outside. Heating coils are putting out heat and I can feel the heat inside the dryer now but now the dryer is extremely loud. Clothes are on the drying rack, thoughts.

I have a Whirlpool Ingils Dryer and it runs for a few minutes then shuts off then starts running again etc..It takes a very long time to dry a load of clothes. Any suggestions?

Amber on December 03, 2011:

Hi. My dryer is acting very strange. When there are clothes in it and it's running, it's fine. No problems. But then when the load stops and I take out the clothes (or even if I leave the clothes in there for a few minutes), it keeps making a sound like it wants to start up again. It's like a roaring sound, kind of how it sounds as soon as it starts. It doesn't ever start on its own, but it keeps making the sound every few seconds, sometimes for days, as if it's trying to start up again. What should I do?

Our dryer made the screeching noise and my dad oiled the drum at first, He described the sound as a second harmonic. When he oiled it again, the noise was longer. What is your opinion and idea for this. The sound does subside and it ends regular.

haha try this one on for size.... I have a frigidare dryer that is about 7 yrs young. The darn thing wont stop heating!! even after the door is open and the clothes are out. and even better the timer doesn't work so i have to un plug it every time i use it!!

Mike on November 16, 2011:

Had an odd issue mentioned here a while back. GE dryer would not start unless you gave the drum a good push. Opened it up and all was well. Turned out my wife had too much piled on top and the lid under load was causing issues for the drum...

I have a Kenmore stackable. Why does our permanent press drying cycle take 3 hours? Is this normal? Also, when I put 3 towels in and put it on timed dry for 40 minutes, the towels were all still wet.

Mary on November 15, 2011:

hi, i need help, my dryer will work for about 10 minutes and then it stops, i took it apart and cleaned it and that doesn't seem to be the problem, what could be wrong with it?

Julie on November 12, 2011:

My gas GE dryer drum has a crack in the plastic that holds the drum in place & so it's slightly off track. Because ofvthis, every time I try to run a load, a corner of a towel, etc. gets caught & I have run back down, open the door & pull out whatever is stuck. Does anyone have a solution to this that doesn't require a repairman charging $100/hr? Is this fixable or should I just shoot the damn thing & start over? BTW: my dryer isn't being made anymore either & it's only about 1 1/2 yrs. old. Go figure. Has anyone else had this same problem & if so, what did you do? Thanks!

dryer noise on November 05, 2011:

I have a Kenmore propane dryer. It makes a noise when drying; if you stop and start it again, sometimes the noise lessens, then comes back again. Could this be a belt problem? Thanks, Joan

How do you replace dryer motor bearings or do you just have to get a new motor

mychak on October 24, 2011:

i have a frigidaire FSE747GES1. i just replaced the rear bearing and about broke my arm patting myself on the back. now, a day later, the thing won't start at all. it's like trying to start a car with a dead battery: i hear the switch click, but the motor doesn't turn over. sometimes, on the third or fourth try it'll roll two or three times, but it doesn't last. could i have done something wrong or is this the starter... or something else all together?

i know it's hard to say for sure, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. i'd love to take care of this myself...

gratefully,

mychak
